Symantec NetBackup

Current Issue

Imagine data intensive enterprises like BFSI, IT and Telecom where huge amounts of data are churned everyday. In these enterprises, data changes often and the amount of stored data is large. In the event of lost data, damaged files, or extended downtime, this could lead to business getting affected. Mr. Basant Rajan, CTO India, Symantec Corporation, talks to SDA-India.com, enlightening our readership on the benefits of Back Up solutions provided by Symantec.

Basant could you introduce yourself to our readership and also brief us on Symantec Corporation?

Hi, I’m CTO-India, Symantec Corporation and as the CTO, my role is to ensure Symantec's long-term success and customer loyalty through innovating next generation technologies, architecture and standards; while providing operational direction to R&D and shared engineering services.
Symantec is a global leader in infrastructure software, enabling businesses and consumers to have confidence in a connected world. The company helps customers protect their infrastructure, information and interactions by delivering software and services that address risks to security, availability, compliance and performance. Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Symantec has operations in more than 40 countries.

Could you explain us Symantec Corporation’s Suite of Services in detail especially the NetBackup solution?

Symantec is a global leader in infrastructure software, enabling businesses and consumers to have confidence in a connected world. The company helps customers protect their infrastructure, information and interactions by delivering software and services that address risks to security, availability, compliance and performance.

There are primarily four reasons why data needs to be backed up or protected in an enterprise, such causes could be human error, temporary outage of physical environment, malicious data and last but not the least unforeseen circumstances such as fire, earthquake, etc.

The one and only solution to the above problem is an effective back up for business critical data in a given enterprise. This where Symantec NetBackup comes into play. NetBackup is a disk based back up providing an efficient and effective storage system for business critical data. It unifies and centrally manages back up solutions for laptops/ desktops/ servers as well as remote offices.

Tell us in what way using Symantec NetBackup could benefit the users?

Imagine data intensive enterprises like BFSI, IT and Telecom where huge amounts of data are churned everyday. In these enterprises, data changes often and the amount of stored data is large. In the event of lost data, damaged files, or extended downtime – this could lead to the business getting affected.

Symantec’s NetBackup delivers high performance data protection from remote office to data center to vault from a single console for all backup and recovery operations. It key benefits include:
· Minimize cost and complexity by implementing a unified data protection solution that provides desktop, remote office, and data center protection across the entire enterprise.

· Meet backup windows with faster disk-based backups, improve storage utilization, and enable more flexible disaster-recovery plans in multi-vendor storage environments.

· Manage more data with fewer people with advanced protection for VMWare environments, email applications, and large databases.

What makes Symantec’s Net Back up different from the other online back up solutions that are available in the market?

Symantec’s NetBackup platform, enterprises get the best of both worlds: unprecedented choice and flexibility to select best-of-breed technologies in replication, snapshots, CDP, data deduplication, encryption, virtual tape and traditional tape – either from Symantec or leading third-party storage vendors. In addition, the NetBackup platform provides a single tool to manage all these various vendors and technologies, which means a single approach to agents, policy management, recovery processes, security, backup reporting and the data catalog.
· Single platform to manage, protect, and recover data across storage tiers, locations, and operating systems.

· Advanced disk-based data protection features that include data deduplication, new virtual tape library controls, support for third-party disk appliances, and more snapshot capabilities.

· Integrated data protection and recovery for virtual environments, critical applications, databases, and servers.

Do you think this is a more efficient and flexible approach to protecting Virtual environment?

Symantec NetBackup minimizes the cost and complexity of data protection and ensure greater business continuity by implementing a solution that unifies desktop, remote office, and data center data protection across the entire enterprise. NetBackup centralizes the management and operations of backup and recovery and provides organizations with the tools and information they need to manage data in complex, heterogeneous environments.

Data protection is an area where virtualization has radically changed the backup paradigm. Standard backup technologies that have been used for years do not translate well into the virtual world. Installing a traditional backup client inside the virtual machine is a valid way of protecting it but demands additional system resources needed by other virtual machines hosted on the same physical server. The disaster recovery advantages that are inherent in VMware’s architecture cannot be exploited with this backup methodology.

Symantec has developed a solution, designed to provide enhanced backup and restore functionality specifically for VMware environments –NetBackup.

Is there anything else that you would like to add for the benefit of our readership?

NetBackup offers comprehensive protection and a single console for the management of all backup and recovery operations. This centralized management platform provides integrated data archiving, migration, and retention capabilities that address regulations for governance and compliance. Advanced reporting on backup and recovery operations enables service-level management of all protected data in your enterprise.

To improve recovery point objectives and recovery time objectives, Symantec Net back up have deployed a plethora of technologies—from snapshots, replication, and virtual tape libraries to deduplication and continuous data protection.

To leverage existing infrastructure investments while taking advantage of new and emerging disk-based data protection technologies, the NetBackup Platform simplifies and centralizes the management of your diverse backup environment from a single console.
