Delta Thinks of In-flight Internet on US Planes

Current Issue
After a number of US carriers announced plans to offer Wi-fi service on specific aircraft models, Delta Airlines has decided it wasn't interested in these half-measures. By next year, it plans to have every aircraft in its domestic fleet fitted with hardware to allow in-flight WiFi access.

Delta Airlines announced that the company would install AirCell's in-flight Internet service on all 330 domestic airplanes. The system is called Gogo, and will ensure broadband access to Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptops, smartphones or PDAs, even at a height of 36,000 feet. The services will include Internet access, as well as access to corporate VPNs, corporate and personal e-mail accounts, SMS texting and instant messaging.

The first half of 2009 will see 133 of Delta's MD88/90 airplanes equipped with the service with another 200 Boeing 737, 757 and 767-300s to follow suit. Delta hopes to have more than 330 airplanes equipped to provide the Wi-Fi service by the end of 2009 making it the only major US airline to offer the service across its entire domestic fleet.

The service will be offered at flat rates: USD 9.95 for flights under three hours, USD 12.95 for anything over that. “Delta remains committed to providing a travel experience that maximizes the time our customers spend with us onboard by offering them even more productivity options,” said Richard Anderson, Delta’s chief executive officer.

Delta Airlines joins the Internet services of American Airlines and Virgin America after Boeing cancelled its Connexion service in fall of 2006. However, Delta just dwarfs the other two airlines, since it rivals offer Internet connectivity on only 30 planes.
