Yahoo Will Refund Customers Of DRM-Protected Music
About a week after Yahoo Music had announced shutting down its store and DRM licensing servers on September 30 this year, it has apparently decided to hand out coupons to anyone looking to replace their soon-to-be-stranded tunes with MP3s.
The Web portal said people having trouble playing music files with Yahoo's digital rights management technology could get coupons for an equivalent collection of MP3s from RealNetworks' Rhapsody music store. The new policy is reflected on Yahoo Music's FAQ, which also notes that if users have serious problems with this arrangement, they can get a refund. The offer is good through December 31, 2008, according to the FAQ.
In February, the company announced it is selling its digital music subscription service, Yahoo Music Unlimited, to Rhapsody America. Rhapsody is a partnership of Real Networks and MTV Networks.
