OpenID Gets Some More Biggies from the Industry
Soon after Yahoo announced its support of the OpenID single sign-on identity system, some of the biggest names in the industry—Microsoft, IBM, Google, and VeriSign, and Yahoo—have joined the board of the organization behind the standard, according to the OpenID Foundation.
The foundation was created in June, although the technology to support OpenID has been around for a couple of years. It enables people to use a single log-on and password at any Web site that supports OpenID technology.
While a single-sign-on mechanism for the Web would be beneficial, OpenID proponents have only managed to convince a small fraction of Web sites, mostly blogs, to accept OpenID credentials. The tide, however, could turn with the support of Internet companies such as Google and Yahoo, as well as established tech companies like IBM and Microsoft.
